PITFALLS OF MANAGING GLAUCOMA WITH MEDS
The primary drawbacks of glaucoma medication lie with patient compliance and the signi cant side effect pro les. Even in patients striving for full compliance, studies have demonstrated that many struggle with proper instillation
of eye drops. One editorial in Journal of Glaucoma noted
that 9 out of 10 patients were found to be unable to apply their drops correctly. (2) Adherence to ocular hypertensive medication prescriptions during the rst year has been reported to range from 51 to 56%. (3) Others have postulated that these reported rates are actually optimum, with real world compliance likely to be even lower. (4)Glaucoma medications are also accompanied by both ocular and systemic side effects. The prostaglandin molecule itself has exhibited some unexpected effects on corneal biomechanics as measured by hysteresis and resistance factor.
