Dear Friends & Colleagues,
There has been tremendous growth in the diagnosis and treatment of vitreo-retinal diseases worldwide. The Asia-Pacific region has matched these developments, but peculiarities exist. Because of diverse cultural and socioeconomic structures, eye care priorities are different among the region's 42 countries. Two elements, however, are common: first, the rising trends of certain retinal conditions such as myopia and diabetes and second, the insufficient number and inadequate distribution of skilled eye health providers.
The Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society (APVRS) serves as an excellent platform to address the emerging disease burden and create programs for developing skilled human resources. I welcome you to the 2016 APVRS Congress in Bangkok. It will be a perfect environment to teach and learn, to meet peers and friends, and most importantly, to identify the ways and means of supporting one of the developing countries in the region.
